Margaret Isabella Speed [sp.1.6.1.5.2.6.3]

Margaret Isabella Speed was the third child of Jacob Speed & Isabella Hall (nee Tones) born July 27th, 1878 at Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham.

Margaret (listed as Isabella) & her parents were living at Easington Lane, Hetton-le-Hole in 1881 where her father was an innkeeper.  Isabella had a brother & a sister as well as 2 older step-sisters & a step-brother.

Isabella’s father died in 1890 & in 1891 she was living with her mother at the Commercial Inn, Front St, Hetton-le-Hole where she was the innkeeper.

By 1901 the family had moved to the Shakespeare Inn, 5 North Terrace, Dawdon & Isabella & her 2 sisters were assisting her mother who was the beer tavern keeper.

Margaret Isabella married Thomas Mills Peel in Jan-March 1905 in Easington.  Thomas was born May 8th, 1880 at Camperdown, & christened May 28th, 1880 at Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, the son of Margaret & George Peel, a coal miner.

In 1911 Thomas & Margaret Isabella were living at 5 Rowlandson Terrace, Ferryhill, Co Durham where Thomas was a coal miner hewer.  They had a 4 year old son, John Hall but it was noted on the census that one child had died.

Son John married Gladys Bessie Fitzsimmons on August 10th, 1930 at South Hetton. In 1939 they & their family were living at Front St, Easington & John was a colliery joiner & sawyer.

At the time of the 1939 register Margaret Isabella & Thomas were living at 2 King St, Easington & Thomas was an onsetter at the colliery.

Thomas died on January 17th, 1946 at 25 Lilac Terr, Shotton.

Margaret Isabella died in Jan-March 1960 in Durham East.

The children of Margaret Isabella Speed & Thomas Mills Peel were:

sp.1.6.1.5.2.6.3.2  Florence Ann Peel born July-September 1909 in Sunderland; died July-September 1909 in Sedgefield, Co Durham
